Darrell Wayne Holte, 80, of Apache Junction, Arizona, formerly of Grand Marais, peacefully passed away on July 8, 2008 at home in the care of his family and Hospice of the Valley.
Darrell was born November 19, 1927 in Grand Marais to Harold and Thelma Holte, and attended Cook County schools. He grew up in Grand Marais.
As a young man, he worked as a commercial fisherman in Colvill and then in the heavy equipment and trucking industry. A veteran of both WWII and the Korean War, Darrell served in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant. In midlife, he became an Ironworker and spent many years of his career working for American Bridge on the Iron Range. As a member of the Grand Marais Masonic Lodge, he served as Worshipful Master and went on to become a member of the Scottish Rite. For the past ten years, Darrell resided in Apache Junction, where he was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and the American Legion of Apache Junction.
Darrell’s passion outside of his family was fishing and he enjoyed many years of Lake Superior fishing at Isle Royale and on the North Shore, fishing on inland lakes and streams in Minnesota as well as in the Gulf of Mexico in his later years.
A beloved husband and father, Darrell leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Patricia; son Michael Holte (Natashia); daughters Lyanne Holte and Barbara Rucker; three grandchildren Cameron Sjoberg, Dannielle Angell, and Ashley Aloni; one great grandchild, Sacia Ogden; a sister, Sue Dittus (Don) and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the fall of 2008 in Grand Marais.


Charlet Henrietta Kratoska, 91, passed peacefully, Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at home at Trout Lake, Gunflint Trail.
Charlet was born December 25, 1916 in Grand Ridge, Illinois, the fifth daughter of Charles and Emma Hagie.
She was a true Gunflint Trail Pioneer, moving to Trout Lake with her husband George “Bud” and daughters Nancy and Janet in 1946. Together, they built and maintained seven housekeeping cabins at the popular resort. 
She was a devoted, loving wife, mother, and grandmother who opened her home to all.  Charlet was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Grand Marais, and was a charter member of the Grand Marais Lioness Club.  She worked side by side with Bud in the Tip of the Arrowhead Association, the Gunflint Trail Association and other tourism organizations.  She enjoyed playing golf as a member of the Gunflint Hills women’s league.  Her version of German Potato Salad was in demand at most events the couple attended. 
Charlet was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, her husband George, an infant daughter Gayle Susan, grandson Mark and great-grandson Shane.
She is survived by her sister Edna Pavey, 103, of Ottawa, Illinois, her daughters Nancy (Russ) Waver of Trout Lake, Jan (Greg) O’Brien of Duluth, eight grandchildren Guy Waver, Craig (Kathy) Waver, Karen Waver, Rusty Waver, Dan (Beth) O’Brien, Erin (John) Cox, Kelly (Tom) Becker, Nancy (Nate) Hooper, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. 
Charlet’s quiet strength is an inspiration to all who knew her.  She will be missed by all.      
 Visitation is one hour before the noon Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, July 21, 2008 at St. John’s Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery.  Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.
